MARION
The Town of Marion, Massachusetts is a seaside community located on Buzzards Bay at the gateway to Cape Cod. Like her sister town of Mattapoisett, Marion was once part of the collective Rochester until it incorporated itself as a separate community in 1852. Present day Marion was originally a Rochester village called Sippican, so named after the Indian tribe that once lived there.
The name Marion was selected to honor Revolutionary War hero Francis Marion. Like Mattapoisett, the town first developed as a summer resort, but now boasts a more stable, year-round population. The town's scenic Sippican Harbor offers a variety of recreational opportunities including boating, fishing, and swimming; and the community still retains the character of a small-town New England community.
Marion was home of Captain Benjamin Briggs, who was lost with his family and crew aboard the ill-fated Mary Celeste. Points of interest include the Marion Music Hall, the Elizabeth Taber Library, and the well-known Tabor Academy preparatory school. All of these landmarks stand as legacies to the town's great benefactor, Elizabeth Taber, who was devoted not only to her hometown but also to culture, the arts and education.
