Correia, Ruth G. (Jolly)

Ruth G. (Jolly) Correia, 93, of Centerville died September 1, 2010 at Alden Court in Fairhaven after a brief illness.
She was the wife of the late Manuel P. Correia.
Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Omer and Ruth (Keelan) Jolly, she lived in Mattapoisett for 25 years before moving to Barnstable Village and later to Centerville.
She co-founded Sharkey’s Tire with her late husband.
She enjoyed stamp collecting and hand writing analysis. She was a former member of the Mattapoisett Women’s Club and a former Girl Scout leader.
Survivors include a son, Donald R. Correia of Mattapoisett; a daughter, Sandy Correia McAlister and her husband Dean of Stuart, FL; 6 grandchildren, David M. Correia of Fairhaven, Dawn-Ruth Mello & Partner Scott Bourgeois of New Bedford, Dean R. Correia and wife Kimberly of Rochester, D. Robin Gouveia and her husband Gregory of Rochester, Gregory D. McAlister of Jupiter, FL, Nicholas McAlister of Woodbridge, VA; 9 great-grandchildren, Tanya Mello of Fairhaven, Valery Stuart and her Husband James of New Bedford, Danielle Correia of Falmouth, Robert Correia of Falmouth, Brian Correia of Falmouth, Heather Correia of Pensacola, FL, Jordan Correia of New Bedford, Jessica S. Correia of Rochester, and Amanda Correia of New Bedford; and 2 great-great-grandchildren, Brayden Estrela of Fairhaven and Madison Estrela of Fairhaven.
She was the grandmother of the late Deirdre Correia and Dianne Correia.
Her private funeral arrangements are with the Saunders-Dwyer Mattapoisett Home For Funerals, 50 County Rd. (Rt. 6), Mattapoisett. Hanna, Stephen R.

Stephen R. Hanna, 69, of Mattapoisett passed away unexpectedly of leukemia on August 31, 2010 at Dana Farber Cancer Institute/Brigham & Women?s Hospital in Boston.
Born in Malone, New York on September 2, 1940, he was the son of the late Robert H. and Elizabeth M. (Mason) Hanna. He was married to Nancy Walker Hanna with whom he shared 47 years of marriage.
He was a graduate of Franklin Academy and attained Eagle Scout ranking as a teenager. He graduated from Norwich University as a 2nd Lieutenant. He was commissioned to the US Army and served during the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War. He earned the rank of Captain and was the recipient of two Bronze Star for Valor as well as other military honors. He went on to work for the truck manufacturing company, Mack Trucks, as a service engineer for many years. During his years of semi-retirement, he went on to found H & H Associates, a regional commercial vehicle and truck parts company based here in Mattapoisett.
In addition to many professional affiliations and memberships, he was a member of the American Legion Florence Eastman Post 280 and the Disabled American Veterans Dr. C.E. Burt Chapter 7. He was an active board member for the Mattapoisett Council on Aging. He recently finished an extensive research project on a early 19th century water delivery wagon for the Mattapoisett Historical Society as part of the Mattapoisett 100 years Celebration.
Survivors include his wife; his 5 children, Deborah Hanna and Kevin Garrett of New York City, Robert Hanna, Jr., M.D. and his wife Dee of Easton, MD, Kelly Hanna-Sen and her husband Nilanjan of Queens, NY, Michael Hanna and his wife Christine of Northampton, MA and Kristen Hanna of Providence, RI; a sister, Mary Edgar of Port Orange, Florida; 4 grandchildren, Justin, Tyler, Sofia and Rohan and his cousin Ernest Mason of Plattsburg, NY.
He was the brother of the late John Hanna who is survived by his wife Beth.
His family will receive guests on Saturday, September 11th from 12 Noon - 3 PM in the Saunders-Dwyer Mattapoisett Home For Funerals, 50 County Rd. (Rt. 6), Mattapoisett. There will be a military honors service at the Massachusetts National Veterans Cemetery in Bourne on Friday, September 10th at 2:45 PM followed by a private family service at Cushing Cemetery in Mattapoisett. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made In honor of his memory and to support cancer research and care for families affected by cancer at Dana Farber Cancer Research Hospital. CYNTHIA LEAS WORCESTER SHANKS (69) of Big Canoe, Georgia
Birthdate: April 24, 1941 (Duluth, Minnesota) Died August 30, 2010
Eldest daughter of the late Commander Frederick Leas Worcester and the late Elizabeth MacPherran Worcester.
She married David Carey Shanks on September 1, l962 in Asheville, N.C., who survives. She is also survived by a daughter, Nanon Clarke Shanks Olson, and her husband, Carl Frederick Olson, of Marietta, Georgia and their three children: Kyle Gustav Olson, David Hayward Olson, and Elizabeth Leas Olson. She is also survived by a son, Andrew MacPherran Shanks, and his wife, Keri Lester Shanks, of Woodbridge, Virginia and their daughter, Elizabeth Lynn Shanks.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Kirsten Conant Shanks, who was survived by her husband, Brendan Michael Halpin, and a daughter, Rowen Shanks Halpin, of Jamaica Plain, New York.
She is also survived by a sister, Elizabeth MacPherran Worcester Numrich, of Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota, and her children: Philip Wixom Numrich, and Helen Elizabeth Numrich DeFlorin.
Mrs. Shanks was educated at the American International School in the Philippines, Montego Bay High School in Jamaica, and at The Abbott Academy in Andover, Massachusetts. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Religion from Mount Holyoke College in North Hadley, Massachusetts.
After her marriage to Mr. Shanks, she resided with her growing family in Wilmington, Delaware; in Huntington, Long Island, New York; in Wayland, Massachusetts; in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; in Marion, Massachusetts; and since 2006, in Big Canoe, Georgia.
While balancing the demands of child-rearing and homemaking, she worked tirelessly for the benefit of her community. She never lost her love of learning, and was a voracious reader. She loved nature in all its forms, and was a friend of creatures great and small.
During her energetic career she was a research assistant in the Psychology Department at the University of Delaware; a school bus driver and nursery school teacher in Huntington, Long Island; a Bookmobile driver for the Framingham Public Library; a bank teller in Wayland, Massachusetts; an employee of The Sudbury Valley Trustees, an environmental conservation organization in Wayland; a paralegal with Palmer & Dodge in Boston; a member of the Parish Committee of the First Parish Unitarian Church of Wayland; a volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; a member of the Sippican Women’s Club, Marion, Massachusetts; and a volunteer at the Good Samaritan Health and Wellness Center, providing free medical care for residents of Pickens County, Georgia.

Dixon, Walter H.

Walter H. Dixon, 94, of Dartmouth died Monday August 30, 2010 at Hathaway Manor Extended Care Facility after a period of declining health. He was the husband of Phyllis B. (Schmidt) Gardner-Dixon and the late Anne L. (Hansen) Dixon.
Born in Fairhaven, the son of the late James G. and Helena M. (Harrison) Dixon, he lived in Fairhaven most of his life before moving to Dartmouth in 1998.
Mr. Dixon was formerly employed by the Standard-Times for many years until his retirement.
During World War II, he served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army. He was a recipient of the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Campaign ribbon, the American Theater Campaign ribbon, the Bronze Star medal for heroic achievement while in battle, the Purple Heart, and the World War II Victory medal.
Mr. Dixon played football and softball for the Varsity Club. In 1932, he was invited to play the violin with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He was an avid bowler and scrimshander.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Walter Dixon and his wife Suzanne of Rochester; a daughter, Holly Ostneberg and her husband Michael of Marion and Florida; a stepson, Arnold Gardner and his wife Claudette of Westford; a stepdaughter, Priscilla Fellows and her husband Gary of New Bedford; a daughter-in-law, Jadine Loo-Dixon of Mattapoisett; ten grandchildren, Amy Bloodsworth, Ellen Correia, Kate Ostneberg, Jacob Dixon, Molly Fournier, Phillip Dixon, Melanie Dixon, Lauren Gardner, Kristina Gardner and Olivia Gardner; and five great-grandchildren.
He was the father of the late Robert Dixon, great-grandfather of the late Bryce Correia and the brother of the late Dorothy Baker.
His private Funeral Service was held Thursday morning, September 2nd at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. Burial followed in the Acushnet Cemetery.
